Your finance contact should be able to provide you with a prequalification -
necessary at the time of most contracts, a good faith estimate - which should
disclose all closing costs & upfront fees, and a lock & shop offer -
which will lock you at the current rate while you shop for a home.
All of that can be accomplished in about 10 minutes on the phone. You will then
have a comfort level as to the price range in which to shop. This is an
important 1st step to assure yourself of a smooth transaction. Once you have the
figures you will then be able to make a realistic comparison to other lenders.
